What Are You Still Carrying That You're Ready to Release?

An invitation to lighten your emotional load and make room for greater peace.

There is something about autumn that invites us to slow down, reflect, and take a closer look at our lives.

As the trees begin releasing their leaves, nature reminds us that letting go is a natural part of life. The trees don't struggle to hold on to what has served its purpose. They simply allow the season to change.

And perhaps there is a little wisdom in that for us, too.

Over the past couple of weeks, we've been talking about the importance of a gentle fall reset and the art of self-renewal. We've explored what it means to pause, recognize our needs, and reconnect with the woman we are beneath all the responsibilities and expectations of everyday life.

Today, I'd like to take that conversation a little deeper.

What are you still carrying that you're ready to release?

The Things We Carry That No One Sees

As women, we can become very good at carrying things.

We carry responsibilities, family concerns, relationships, schedules, and the needs of those we love.

But sometimes, we carry things that aren't nearly as visible.

Perhaps it's disappointment over something that didn't turn out the way you imagined.

Maybe it's grief over someone you've lost, a relationship that has changed, or a chapter of life that has come to an end.

It might be guilt over a decision you made years ago, resentment you've never quite expressed, or the lingering belief that you should have done something differently.

And then there are the expectations.

The expectation that we should always be strong.

That we should have everything figured out by now.

That we should be available whenever someone needs us.

That somehow, taking care of ourselves should come after we've taken care of everyone else.

Does any of that sound familiar?

The interesting thing is that we can carry these thoughts, feelings, and expectations for so long that we hardly notice their weight anymore.

They simply become part of our everyday lives.

When Holding on Becomes a Habit

Sometimes we hold on because something mattered deeply.

Other times, we hold on because we've become so accustomed to a particular role, relationship, or way of thinking that we can't imagine doing things differently.

Perhaps you've always been the dependable one.

The peacemaker.

The caregiver.

The woman who keeps everything running smoothly.

And while these qualities can be beautiful expressions of love, they can also become exhausting when we forget that our own needs matter, too.

Here's something worth considering:

Just because you've carried something for a long time doesn't mean you have to keep carrying it in the same way.

You can love your family without taking responsibility for everyone's happiness.

You can remember someone you've lost without believing you must remain in the same place emotionally forever.

You can acknowledge past mistakes without allowing them to define your worth.

And you can appreciate the woman you've been while giving yourself permission to become someone a little different.

Letting Go Doesn't Mean Forgetting

I think this is especially important when we're talking about grief, loss, and life's more difficult experiences.

Letting go doesn't mean forgetting someone you love.

It doesn't mean pretending something didn't hurt.

And it certainly doesn't mean that what happened wasn't important.

Sometimes letting go simply means loosening our grip on the pain, guilt, or expectations surrounding an experience.

It means allowing ourselves to remember with love while gradually making room for peace.

And there is no timetable for that.

Healing isn't something we can rush or check off a list.

Some days we feel lighter. Other days, an unexpected memory or emotion reminds us that we're still finding our way.

That's part of being human.

We can honor what we've experienced without allowing it to determine everything that comes next.

A Gentle Invitation to Release

I'd like to invite you to take a few quiet moments for yourself.

Perhaps you'll sit outside with a warm cup of tea, take a walk among the changing leaves, or settle into your favorite chair.

You don't need to make any big decisions.

Just permit yourself to reflect.

Ask yourself:

  • What am I carrying that feels heavier than it needs to?

  • Is there an expectation I've placed on myself that no longer serves me?

  • Am I holding on to guilt, disappointment, or an old belief about who I should be?

  • What might become possible if I permitted myself to loosen my grip, even a little?

You may not have an answer right away, and that's perfectly fine.

Sometimes the first step toward releasing something is simply recognizing that it's there.

You might even try a gentle affirmation:

“I can honor my past while making room for peace in my present.”

Notice how that feels.

You don't have to force yourself to believe something that doesn't feel true yet. Simply allow the possibility that life might feel a little lighter.

Making Room for What Comes Next

One of the beautiful things about autumn is that it reminds us that release and renewal belong together.

When the leaves fall, the tree doesn’t give up.

It's preparing for another season.

And perhaps we can look at our own lives with that same understanding.

Maybe this is your season to release an old expectation.

Maybe it's time to stop measuring yourself against who you were ten or twenty years ago.

Perhaps you're ready to loosen your grip on a responsibility that was never entirely yours to carry.

Or maybe you're simply ready to be a little kinder to yourself.

Whatever it is, remember that renewal doesn't require you to become an entirely different woman.

It invites you to reconnect with the wisdom, strength, compassion, and resilience that have been within you all along.

And sometimes, the most meaningful growth begins when we finally give ourselves permission to put something down.

A Final Thought

As you move through this week, I encourage you to notice what feels heavy and what brings you peace.

You don't have to release everything at once.

You don't have to have all the answers.

And you certainly don't have to do it perfectly.

Sometimes one small act of self-compassion is the beginning of a beautiful new chapter.

Would You Like a Little Support Along the Way?

Sometimes having someone walk beside you, listen without judgment, and help you see things from a different perspective can make all the difference.
